Heather Gilligan (’11) Set to Launch Online Magazine

January 10, 2011

Heather Gilligan (class of 2011) will serve as editor and publisher of the new online magazine, The Public Intellectual, set to launch in March.

The periodical aims to bridge the gap between peer-reviewed journals and popular journalism, emphasizing “the new knowledge, valuable critical insight, and fresh perspectives that academia produces,” but which often don’t make it to a wider audience.

The magazine is seeking submissions from researchers in the humanities or social sciences and plans to cover issues such as civil rights, race, feminism, sexuality and immigration. It is due to be published several times a year in an open-access format, although readers will have to pay for the planned iPad and Kindle e-reader editions.

Its impending launch was highlighted in a recent article in the Times Higher Education.
