Patriotic Betrayal: The Inside Story of the CIA’s Secret Campaign to Enroll American Students in the Crusade Against Communism

Please join us for a conversation with author Karen M. Paget to discuss her latest book, Patriotic Betrayal.  J-School lecturer, Adam Hochschild, will moderate the discussion.

In this revelatory book, Karen M. Paget shows how the CIA turned the National Student Association into an intelligence asset during the Cold War, with students used—often wittingly and sometimes unwittingly—as undercover agents inside America and abroad. In 1967, Ramparts magazine exposed the story, prompting the Agency into engineering a successful cover-up. Now Paget, drawing on archival sources, declassified documents, and more than 150 interviews, shows that the Ramparts story revealed only a small part of the plot.

Karen M. Paget is a political scientist with more than 45 years of experience in academia, government (local, state, and national), philanthropy, and public policy. She holds a doctorate from the University of Colorado, as well as a M.A. in International Affairs. She is a contributing editor to The American Prospect, and has written on topics ranging from gender politics to the U.S. military budget. She is coauthor of Running as a Woman: Gender and Power in American Politics, and has lectured in Europe, Latin America, and Asia. In 1998, the Open Society Institute awarded her a fellowship to write Patriotic Betrayal
