J298 Cinematography and Sound

This course is only open to documentary track students.

Cinematography and Sound is for second-year graduate students and is designed to expand on the video camera, lighting, and sound instruction students learned during their first year of study. The class focuses on supporting student master’s projects for those studying documentary, short form video, and multimedia using the C200 cameras. The course covers advanced scene work; working with light, color, and lenses; camera rigging and safety; and how to move with the camera in various settings. Students study different styles of cinematography and produce a lookbook for their thesis projects. The weekly meetings will be a combination of demonstrations, practice, and critiques. This class is intended for those interested in advancing their technical skills, but also welcomes students not interested specifically in becoming a director of photography (DP) but who want to learn a new vocabulary so that they can communicate their vision to their camera crew.
