J231 Advanced Business Reporting

This course will count toward the business certificate.

J231 is the second in a three-semester sequence for students earning a certificate in business journalism. Through guest speakers, targeted readings, discussion, and case studies, students in J231 will gain a deeper understanding of how to write intelligent stories on the economy, economic policy, and business.  Students will learn how our current economic arrangements came to exist and how to think critically about media coverage of the economy. Students will also work on short projects that involve reporting and research, and the course will feature a five-week module focused on reporting about AI. In this module, students will have the chance to report a story on AI and potentially publish with the award-winning nonprofit newsroom Capital & Main.

J231 builds upon the foundational knowledge gained in J230: Intro to Business Reporting, making it ideal for those aiming to specialize in business journalism. While J230 is a formal prerequisite, students with relevant experience or permission from the instructor may enroll in J231 directly, depending on availability. J230 introduces essential concepts in finance, markets, and economics, whereas J231 provides the opportunity to apply those principles in a real-world context, strengthening students’ portfolios and professional readiness.
