J219 MINI Future of Technology in Journalism (5 weeks)

This is a five-week mini course and will meet at the following times:

  • Week 1 – Jan 20
  • Week 2 – Jan 27
  • Week 3 – Feb 3
  • Week 4 – Feb 10
  • Week 5 – Feb 17

This short course explores emerging technologies reshaping journalism and media, with a primary focus on artificial intelligence (AI), Internet platforms and business models, and other transformative technological innovations such as blockchain. Students will examine how these technologies and platforms impact the production, distribution, and consumption of news, as well as their broader implications for media ethics, audience trust, and the future of journalism. Through case studies, hands-on projects, and guest speakers from the tech and media industries, students will gain a deep understanding of the evolving relationship between technology and journalism. Topics include the impact of AI on the news industry, the impact of Internet platforms on the journalism business, and the role of AI in content creation and curation. By the end of the course, students will be equipped with the knowledge and critical thinking skills necessary to navigate and shape the future of journalism in a rapidly changing technological landscape.
