Travel Editor - San Francisco Chronicle

The travel editor (local & regional) is the champion of Northern California and West Coast travel for the San Francisco Chronicle audience. He/she understands how our audiences travels today--what they’re hoping to find, what they want to spend, what inside access they desire--and conjures stories and service pieces that are fresh, highly useful and entertaining, and that maintain the highest standards of journalism.

The editor is responsible for producing this content on our major platforms:

In print: The editor edits and produces ~26 (half the year’s) Travel sections that focus on local and regional destinations. He/she maintains the production schedule, develops the freelance writer pool, and coordinates with art, photo, copy and production staff.

On While the print sections are important, the new editor will be instrumental in transforming our current “print-first” approach to a digital-first one, working with the Chronicle’s senior team in creating the next generation of travel journalism for Northern California. Stories, visuals and packaging for the weekly content should be seen through the online lens.

The editor coordinates with the second travel editor (national & international) across sections; if one editor is out of the office, the other ensures that the sections are executed each week.

Job description

Outline a plan for the local and regional sections and online versions, including regular features that cover food, lodging, shopping, events, sightseeing, outdoor activities and history.
Create and maintain a yearly editorial calendar, coordinating with the Travel Editor and advertising/marketing departments.
Propose and plan each section’s content across all platforms
Manage the sections’ freelance budget.
Learn to work with our content management system to program
Work with staff writers and recruit freelancers.
Top-edit all stories.
Manage the production of all sections, working with design and copy desk.
Oversee all photo assignments, working with photography department.

The team reports with accuracy and depth, tells stories through vivid and entertaining language, and critiques with insight and flair. It breaks news--then pulls off in-depth coverage of trends, people and issues. The team also knows how to make our audiences salivate. A deep love of our respective topics informs our coverage. With the Chronicle’s audiences on multiple platforms, the team must do all of this in a variety of forms.

We always ask, How do we travel now? When it comes to local and regional travel--one of our audience’s top interests--we strive to serve the needs of the sophisticated, smart, adventurous weekend traveler.
We do great service journalism: stories packed with information that is well-reported and entertaining.
We know that here in Northern California, our “local” travel destinations are often of global interest--Napa, Tahoe, Monterey. We bring our local expertise to these high-profile places.
We make informed judgments: What tastes good? What is worth the price? What’s the best experience?
We plan stories that add to our online base of great travel information.


What will it take to be successful?

Journalism or related degree, or equivalent work experience.
Three plus years experience assigning and editing feature stories for print and/or online publications, and producing stories and projects (newspaper sections, online channels, magazine departments) through to release.
Experience reporting and editing travel-related content optimal.
Ability to think creatively in a fast-paced, evolving newsroom.
Ability to think creatively about deploying content over multiple channels.
Must have an appreciation for digital production
