Alumnus Wins Online Journalism Award for Africa Project

October 30, 2010

Martin Ricard (MJ ’10) was honored Saturday, Oct. 30, for his master’s project "A Seed is Forever."

The multimedia story took the top prize for Multimedia Feature Presentation in the student category at the Online News Association’s yearly Online Journalism Awards banquet, this year held in Washington D.C. The national contest awards some of the best work produced in the digital journalism landscape.

Ricard’s multimedia presentation documented his travels in Sierra Leone as he explored issues of agricultural history and the development of farming in Africa. The project was produced in conjunction with the Africa Reporting Project class at the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism.

This is the second year in a row a student at the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism has won an award in this category. Last year, alumna Lisa Pickoff-White (MJ ’09) won for her project "It Happens at Midnight."
