A Soviet-born, Detroit-bred journalist, videographer, writer, and editor, Mark Kurlyandchik often explores things we take for granted. Simple questions drive his perceptive stories about the complicated people and the complex systems that influence how we live.

A former senior editor at Hour Detroit magazine, Kurlyandchik’s work has been recognized numerous times by the Detroit chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. In 2013, he was one of three finalists for the chapter’s Young Journalist of the Year award. He’s been an in-studio guest on Michigan Public Radio and WDET-FM, and his story on the so-called “Michigan dialect” is required reading in English-language classes at both the University of Michigan and Calvin College. His work has also appeared in The Atlantic Wire, The Huffington Post, and Al Jazeera America.
