Juan Martinez

Juan is a bilingual multimedia journalist. His career goal is to be a sports reporter and editor at an online news organization or a daily newspaper/sports publication.

Born and raised in Oakland, Calif., Juan is currently a second-year student at the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism. He studied Print/Online Journalism and graduated from San Francisco State University.

Juan interned at Comcast SportsNet Bay Area during the summer of 2014. At CSN Bay Area, he was a digital media producer.

Previously, Juan was a community editor/assistant managing editor/general assignment reporter/sports and feature writer for OaklandLocal.com. He was also a Communications Associate at Full Court Press Communications and interned for Newswire21.org. As a part of the latter’s team, Juan won the 2010 Award for Excellence in Community Reporting from the Society of Professional Journalists in Northern California. He also wrote extensively for SF State’s Golden Gate Xpress, which won the 2011 Associated Collegiate Press Newspaper Pacemaker Award.

Throughout his life, Juan has experienced many challenges. However, he has been successful in overcoming these obstacles with the help from his family. Juan is Mexican-American and the first person in his family to graduate from college.
