Outside the Box

This week’s show is Outside the Box. We’ll find out about a new strategy for reversing high diabetes rates among Latino seniors—dance class. We’ll meet street performers whose work life is anything but mundane. We’ll also meet grilled cheese masters who are more cordon bleu than corner deli. You’ll hear from pit bull owners who say their dogs should be loved, not feared. And we have a story about an outdoor art piece that liberates the secrets of libraries, and we’ll talk to a guy whose career plan is to not to work one job, but fifty.

Diabetes in the District

Diabetes has hit the Mission District hard. The population there is almost twice as likely to be hospitalized for the chronic disease than other San Franciscans. Now, a new health program is addressing the problem at its root.

Twice a month, Mission Neighborhood Health Center teams up with the Oberlin Dance Collective for “Bailamos,” a 30 minute wellness class taught by Humu Yansane incorporating yoga and salsa dancing.

The goal, says Yansane, is “to release stress, enourage blood circulation, body awareness and stress relief techniques for MNHC health population who suffer from diabetes, stroke, heart disease and high
