Risk

This week’s show is about Risk. We have a report on local entrepreneurs who brave bad economic conditions to open their businesses. We’ll seek out opponents to play “Risk.” We’ll meet a professional gambler who plays poker online. We’ll travel to Beijing, where an illegal migrant has started a thriving trash collection business despite the risks involved. We’ll have a conversation with an economist about what risk actually is.

Old Fashioned Games? They Really Are.

We all have fond memories of playing Monopoly, Scrabble and Connect Four when we were kids.  But when you’re an adult, it’s really hard to find people who can dedicate the time to play.  After his friends and family turned him down for a game of Risk, Ian Sherr went in search of more *worthy* opponents at Board Games night at Games of Berkeley.

Risky Bets?

When we think of risk and money, our minds naturally think of gambling. Despite it’s risks, some people actually gamble for a living. And with the rise of Internet gambling sites, people can play against each other at any time, from anywhere in the world. The more than $2 billion dollar industry has made playing poker online a lucrative business. In our next story, correspondent Kim Geiger talks with a friend who says playing poker for a living isn’t as risky as we might think.

One man’s trash…

For our last story, we take you to China, where it’s illegal to move without government permission. But this hasn’t stopped millions of migrants who move around the country, especially from rural areas to Beijing. These migrants cannot use public schools, hospitals or receive government aid. They regularly face police harassment and possible jail time.  Correspondent Lisa Pickoff-White met a man in Beijing who’s willing to risk all this just to make living digging through other people’s trash.

Great topic to be talking about, with current economic conditions. Yet risk is the only way you can achieve your ambitions.

Look at any top entrepreneur they all take risks. In particular I recommend reading Duncan Bannatyne’s autobiography entitled ‘Anyone Can Do It: My Story’.

Good luck to anyone who wants to be an entrepreneur.
