Reports From Shanghai

EvictedA collaboration between Todd Carell’s “Digital TV and the World Program” and Carolyn Wakeman’s “Covering Shanghai” course has produced a series of video pieces for washingpost.com on issues surrounding the city’s precipitous economic development:

Joe Mullin (“Evicted”) looks into the millions of regular people forced to move out of their homes, often with little or no compensation, as the city tries to beautify and modernize itself. (Mullin managed to sneak out some truly stunning hand-held video footage shot by a man who was being evicted, viewable separately here.)

Kim Perry (“Retired”) examines treatment of the elderly in urban China, where economic change and a growing individualism threaten to make the old ideal of three generations under one roof a thing of the past.

Nagomi Onda (“Bar Girl”) ventures into Shanghai’s late-night Karaoke parlors, where young Chinese women cater to the whims of visiting Japanese businessmen despite an atmosphere of tension between the two countries.

Jonathan Kaminsky (“Migrants”) talks his way onto a construction site to look at the millions of migrant workers who are remaking China’s urban landscape in more ways than one.
