Hail to the Chief! (...and other scenes around Davis.)

UCD police chief Calvin Handy, above, and his jazz combo performed recently at the Wednesday farmer's market in Davis. Meantime, at last week's monthly BECA meeting, UCD Prof. Ralph Aldredge (below) presided in Jann L. Murray-García's absence, while members Bernita Toney (middle) and Tansey Thomas (bottom) weighed in with their views.

UCD English prof. Clarence Major (below) showed his artistic side with the exhibition opening of 38 of his paintings at a new art studio, the Main Street Gallery, in Winters...

...while 11 year-old Zoe Henry (below) admired his work. It's a beautiful show, and everyone is encouraged to check it out.

For the next BECA meeting, see the schedule at the top of this page.

1990 State Study of Racial Climate in Davis Schools
Urged Reforms Largely Unmet by the System
The 1990 California Department of Education study of DJUSD, commissioned by then-superintendent Darrel Taylor, recognized growing racial and ethnic strains in the school system. The report urged Davis school officials to take immediate steps to improve the educational and racial climate through a number of reforms, including increased diversity in hiring.
Nearly 15 years later, data clearly show that progress has been minimal at best. And it should be cause of concern for Davis parents and children of all backgrounds and races.
