In 2008, the dollar has hit a record low against the euro and weakened against a number of international currencies. For U.S. exporters and tourists visiting America, the greenback’s fall has been positive. Goods sent overseas are now cheaper. Trips from Europe to San Francisco are suddenly more affordable. And U.S. real estate has become more attractive.

For California wine makers, who buy their wine barrels from Europe, production costs have surged. Immigrants who send their money back to their countries are struggling with the dollar’s decreasing exchange rate. The economy is slumping, and finding work is proving more difficult as the dollar drops.
