As an undergraduate student, Spencer Whitney worked on conducting research for his thesis on Jazz Communication and Improvisation. He is also currently the co-managing editor of 101 Magazine, which is a newly founded online publication at Howard University geared towards the cultural and lifestyle interests of college students in both the graduate and undergraduate setting. Some of the duties that accompany this position involve being responsible for upkeep of website and management of overall content for this online magazine, working with editors and helping to cultivate relationships with businesses and news sources, and reporting on national and local news stories in the greater DMV area. Spencer’s passion for writing and communication brought him to become a part of the college radio station WHBC 830AM as an on-air personality and music editing team member. Working as an on-air personality for the radio show required researching artists, show topics and interviewing guest artists that frequently made appearances at the radio station. The radio show was a twice-weekly talk/music show called The Cipher which featured hip-hop music, news, and issues from all across the country. He also interned with SiriusXM Satellite Radio in Washington, DC and was responsible for researching topics, call screenings, and audio editing as well as the maintenance of the intern blog and social media (Facebook, Twitter) outlets for recruiting purposes. Beginning in January, 2011, he became the Executive Producer of a weekly Intern Variety Talk Show at SiriusXM Radio. Spencer has decided to continue his education and pursue a Master’s degree in Communications at the University of California, Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism.t
