About the Center

The Knight Digital Media Center is dedicated to helping good journalists and good journalism succeed in the 21st Century. Housed jointly at University of California, Berkeley, Graduate School of Journalism, and the University of Southern California Annenberg School for Communication.

The training provided at USC focuses on leadership and topic training to journalists already working in online, multimedia environments. The seminars aim to increase participants' critical thinking and depth of understanding of the topics they cover and the environment they publish in.

Training at UCB focuses on multimedia skill development and technology training for reporters and editors. Topics covered include using digital video, photo and audio equipment; storyboarding; voiceovers and other broadcast techniques; video and audio editing; website creation and design; using database-driven map mash-ups, blogging, podcasting and more.

The program was initially established in 1999 as the Western Knight Center for Specialized Journalism through a grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.
