The Graduate School of Journalism is at North Gate Hall on the northern edge of the UC Berkeley campus at the intersection of Hearst and Euclid Avenues. North Gate is a brown shingle building on the southeast corner of that intersection. The main phone number is 510-642-3383.

Directions

On Interstate 80 in the East Bay, get off at the University Avenue exit in Berkeley.

Go east up University toward the campus for about two miles. Go past the major intersection of Shattuck Avenue. The next block after that will be Oxford Street. Turn left onto Oxford.

Drive north on Oxford for two blocks and turn right onto Hearst Avenue. Go up and over a small hill until you come to a traffic light. This is the intersection of Euclid Avenue, and North Gate Hall is on the right just past this intersection.

Parking

Street parking is available on city streets near North Gate Hall. But spaces are metered or have time restrictions.

A public parking garage is available for longer term parking on Hearst Avenue across the street from North Gate Hall. Public spaces are on the second level and there usually is ample parking available during weekdays. But if it's full you would have to go to a downtown Berkeley parking garage for long-term parking.

Street Parking

On city streets around Hearst and Euclid Avenues you can park for up to 2 hours during the day. Some slots simply restrict parking for between 30 minutes and 2 hours. Metered spaces similarly vary in time from 30 minutes to 2 hours.

Parking meters are enforced until about 6 or 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday. They are not enforced on Sundays.

Parking Garage

IMPORTANT:
Only the 2nd level of parking garage is open to the public.  All other levels require a permit.

There is a public parking garage across the street from North Gate Hall.

The parking garage is on Hearst Avenue at the corner of Scenic Avenue and has four levels. The lowest level is accessible on Hearst Avenue and the top three levels are accessible around the corner on Scenic Avenue.

Garage Fees

Public parking is paid by the hour. On weekdays it starts at $3 for the first hour up to $15 for all day. On evenings and weekends it starts at $1 for the first hour up to $7 for all day.

You pay at a vending machine, and you need to bring exact change. The vending machines take $1 and $5 bills, and nickels, dimes and quarters.

Garage Hours of Operation

Evenings and Weekends - Monday through Friday from 5 p.m. to 2 a.m., Saturday from 7 a.m. to 2 a.m. and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 2 a.m. all four levels of the Hearst garage are open to public parking. Plenty of empty spaces should be available.

Weekdays - Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. only the second level of the Hearst garage is open to public parking. As a result, only a limited number of spaces are available (if you can't find space and need long-term parking, you'll have to go to a downtown Berkeley garage).

Parking Permits for Garage

If you're a guest speaker or instructor and the J-School has given you a day parking permit, you can park anywhere on the first, third or fourth levels of the garage. On the second level of the garage, only park in the slot with the blue Permit Parking labels on the columns, not in the yellow public parking areas. Be sure to scratch off the appropriate date on the permit and hang it on the rear-view mirror on your front windshield, facing forward (instructions are on the back of the permit).

Garage Access

Hearst is a split-level street running East and West. Access to the parking garage entrance is on the upper level of Hearst, which is one-way going west.

So if you're traveling east up Hearst Avenue, such as from the I-80 freeway, you'll have to make a series of turns to get to the upper level of Hearst and access the garage.

To do that, as you come up Hearst Avenue traveling east, turn left on Euclid Avenue, which is a main intersection. Go one block and turn right on Ridge Road. Go one block and turn right on LeRoy Avenue. Go one more block and turn right back onto Hearst Avenue.

You're now traveling west on Hearst Avenue. Go past the intersection with Euclid Avenue, and on the right you'll see the entrance to the lowest level of the parking garage.

Garages in Downtown Berkeley

If you need long-term parking and no spaces are available at the Hearst Avenue garage, you will have to use a public garage in downtown Berkeley.

Go back down Hearst Avenue to the west and turn left onto Oxford Street. Drive south on Oxford for two blocks and turn right onto University Avenue. Go one block and turn left at the major intersection onto Shattuck Avenue.

(if you're coming from the west off the I-80 freeway, go up University Avenue and turn right onto Shattuck Avenue)

The next three cross streets will be Addison Street, Center Street and Allston Way. Turn right (toward the west) on any of these three streets and in the first block there will be a large public parking garage. There also are other public parking garages in this general area. The garages charge $8 to $10 for all-day parking.

Whichever garage you select, you'll be within about a block of the intersection of Shattuck Avenue and Center Street, and from there you can take a shuttle during weekdays or walk to North Gate Hall.
