Description:
NEWSPAPER REPORTER
Ready for a newspaper job that will give you the real-world experience you can only dream about at a big city newspaper? Start a career in the world of journalism as the primary reporter at an award-winning weekly newspaper. The job begins at the beginning of December.
The Hardwick Gazette is a 123-year-old, paid-circulation, award-winning newspaper located in rural, north-central Vermont. We cover hard news, community events, cultural activities and sports in 10 small towns.
We need a reporter who is curious, knows how to look and listen for news on Main Street, understands the difference between news gathering and news making, thrives on hard work, can meet deadlines, and is eager to learn. The person we hire will be a team player who can turn problems into opportunities, a self-starter who can accept responsibility and rise to a challenge, and, of course, have a sense of humor. The person will write at least eight stories a week and will use a camera frequently.
We're a small weekly, but we cover serious issues that affect people's lives. The largest, public-sector embezzlement in the state's history was a local story we broke, and we're still covering it two years later. Wind power is an important issue in the Gazette's coverage area. We're on the story. Sustainable agriculture is big here, as are our town and school boards. We write news stories about meetings and about issues. Our news is local and there is never a shortage of news.
We're a short drive to six major ski areas, within a stone's throw of many lakes and rivers, and the scenery outside the window can't be beat.
