Description:
The Associated Press currently seeks a Breaking News Staffer for its Atlanta, Ga., bureau. The staffer reports to the Georgia news editor and works closely with the Alabama news editor to aggressively pursue breaking news in both states and to identify stories that need further development. The staffer files stories to state lines, works closely with reporters in the field, helps coordinate coverage across multiple teams, helps communicate coverage plans and offers assistance to AP subscribers, and collaborates with the regional editing desk in Atlanta on stories of state, national and global significance.
Authorization to work in the U.S. will be mandatory.

Experience:
Candidates should have demonstrated excellence as an editor and a news leader. Key issues in the territory include politics, legal affairs, education and transportation. Experience in these areas is a plus. Applicants should have a demonstrated aggressiveness in pursuing breaking news and success in collaborating and communicating with various levels of staff and customers.
Applicants must be able to recognize and develop newsworthy stories of state, national and global interest, and work accurately under deadline pressure. Applicants need strong organizational skills with the ability to juggle multiple projects across formats and meet deadlines. Applicants need to understand the growing importance of multimedia news and be able to coordinate with AP staffers from other formats. The successful candidates should have at least three years of full-time reporting or editing experience.
Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English language is required.
