Roll Call is a premier source for news, analysis and commentary on the people and politics of Congress and Washington. Roll Call consists of a print edition that publishes five days a week when Congress is in session, and a companion online edition, RollCall.com, that includes all the editorial from the print edition as well as a growing range of unique web-only content such as daily breaking news, blogs and columns, photography and video. Roll Call is a leading publication in the Washington market, with revenue coming from advertising, event and sponsorship sales as well as print and online subscriptions.
We are looking to appoint an Editor, based in Washington, to provide visionary leadership that will extend Roll Call’s position as a must-read, high-impact publication that upholds the highest journalistic standards of quality, objectivity and fairness. The Editor will be responsible for publishing each print issue and each day’s web output to those standards, as well as successfully leading, recruiting and retaining a staff of talented and highly-motivated reporters, editors, visual journalists and production staff. The successful candidate will have experience in editing and managing groups of journalists and in being responsible for ensuring that they meet regular publication deadlines. They will bring a track record in staking out a vision for a publication, section or website and seeing that vision realized. In addition they should understand the role and potential of mobile media and emerging digital technologies. Experience covering the actions of Congress, as well as Washington politics and political campaigns, is a must.
This role reports to the Senior Vice President and Editorial Director of CQ Roll Call.
Key responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to, the following: developing and maintaining, in consultation with the Editorial Director, a clear strategy for continuously improving the overall quality and impact of content in Roll Call and RollCall.com and articulating that direction both internally and externally; developing and maintaining, in consultation with the Editorial Director, a clear digital strategy that makes RollCall.com a dynamic and engaging resource of news and information on Capitol Hill; taking full accountability for day-to-day management of Roll Call including ensuring the timely publication of each day’s print edition and updates to the website; and, managing a team of reporters, editors, photographers, copy editors and production personnel, including communicating Editorial and company goals and values to staff and working with human resources on matters of recruiting, retention, performance, skills enhancement and career development.

Experience:
The ideal candidate will have graduate education or equivalent work experience; seven-plus years experience as a news editor and manager; experience in online news coverage and presentation; experience covering and/or guiding the coverage of Congress and the federal government; a track record of success as an inspiring newsroom leader; excellent communication skills; an ability to maintain strong relationships laterally across an organization and able to build and manage a team; an ability to communicate company values and goals to a newsroom; and, an ability to work in a highly competitive and dynamic environment.
