The Associated Press is seeking a full-time reporter for its Las Vegas bureau.
This reporter will cover all facets of the gambling industry, with a focus on strong beat reporting, source development and accountability journalism. The reporter must be able to work across departments and formats, especially video, to provide cutting edge coverage of the business of the industry, forces that are shaping it and trends within it. He/she works with the news editor to set the beat’s agenda and develop aggressive spot and hard-edged enterprise reporting for the AP’s global newspaper, online and broadcast audience.
-work with the news editor and the regional editing desk to ensure that the AP is aggressively pursuing breaking news and providing agenda-setting coverage of Nevada’s powerful casino industry.
-identify and develop stories that break news and have impact.
-write and report compelling enterprise for state, national and global audiences.
-execute those stories in a timely fashion.
-report and write on deadline in competitive situations.

Candidate should have demonstrated superior news judgment, with experience reporting and writing news for global audiences on multiple platforms. Superior writing ability, beat reporting skills and source development experience required. Candidate must have a proven understanding of the growing importance of multimedia news and be able to coordinate with AP staffers from other formats. Candidate must be a creative problem-solver who can work as a member of a team and demonstrate versatility in handling spot news, features, entertainment and sports.
Qualifications for the successful candidate include:
-Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
-experience with computer-assisted reporting, FOI and investigative techniques is preferred.
-a proficiency in multiple platforms, especially video, is a plus.
-fluency in Spanish is a plus.
-proven ability to recognize and develop newsworthy stories of global interest and work accurately under deadline pressure.
-demonstrated strong organizational skills with the ability to juggle multiple projects across formats and meet deadlines.
-at least two years of full-time reporting experience at a daily newspaper, broadcast station or AP bureau.
-be able to travel and work a variety of hours.
-Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English language is required.
-Authorization to work in the U.S. will be mandatory.
