Description:
The Central Desk Newspaper Producer produces pages and non-breaking news web posting for the Scripps newspapers that the Central Desk serves and their niche products or special publications. The production of these pages includes the design, presentation, picture selection, copy editing, and the writing of captions and headlines.
Key Activities:
• Ensure all product deadlines and quality standards are met.
• Present the news clearly and producing pages with an eye to limiting errors and inaccuracies, good headline writing, play of stories, photo/graphic presentation, and consistent deadline performance.
• Respond to concerns or suggestions from supervisors and local editors or their designees about story play, presentation, headlines, etc.
• Develop a personal and shared center, and a wide knowledge of the communities which the center serves.
• Implement the division common styles (written-word and presentation) and guidelines in the most efficient manner possible.
• Retrieve a story from the wire and prepare it for publication.
• Work with daily budgets to communicate plans to the central desk newspapers’ editors, their designated representatives and the central desk’s other mid-level managers.
• Work with editors on projects and stories of importance across all markets.
Skill Requirements:
• Must have ability to improve and develop own skills through feedback, personal development and shared best practices.
• Must demonstrate organizational efficiency and effectiveness necessary to contribute to a fast-paced production environment serving multiple customers
• Must possess a solid news judgment.
• Must possess a clear sense of mission, a design/presentation philosophy and outstanding editing and writing skills to ensure the integrity of all news products that come through the central desk.
• Must demonstrate a thorough understanding and operational fluency of in line editing; copy editing, headline writing, picture editing, and publication design (from font management to color theory).
• Must demonstrate a thorough understanding and operational fluency of contemporary newspaper technology (Saxotech experience preferred) and front-end system interaction with wire services, syndicated feeds, online CMS system, etc.
• Must show understanding knowledge of libel laws as well as state and federal laws regarding open meetings, open records and access to information.
• Must possess an entrepreneurial spirit and be an innovative thinker.
• Must possess strong communication (written and oral) and interpersonal skills necessary to navigate multiple customers and supervisors at multiple locations, both within and outside the newsrooms.
• Must exhibit high standards of accuracy and fairness.
• Must be willing to work nights, weekends and holidays.
Experience:
Education
• Some college preferred.
• A minimum of 1 - 2 years daily newspaper editorial experience preferred.
