About National Yemen
National Yemen was founded in spring of 2010 in order to competitively raise the standard of journalism in Yemen and create a news institution objective and financially independent from both government and opposition parties, as well as anti-government and separatists lobby groups. Most, if not all of media institutions in Yemen fall under these categories. In early 2011, the revolutionary activities wracked the growth of the paper but it still continued to publish weekly editions even through the worst months of the revolution. With the new consensus government in place, National Yemen looks to rebuild and grow the decimated institution of journalism in Yemen through its paper and recently established foundation.

Description of Position

This position will place the successful applicant at the core of National Yemen’s regrowth in post-revolutionary Yemen. The position will require the successful applicant to adjust to a rapidly changing job description and do what is necessary to help National Yemen reach its full potential. A successful candidate must have a proven ability to work in challenging, highly dynamic and sometimes austere environments with little supervision. The ideal candidate must possess a strong mix of skills in journalism, international development and business development.

Qualifications
While an ideal candidate will possess many of the following qualifications, chief among them is a deep commitment to National Yemen and strong desire to develop journalism in Yemen.

• 1-2 years of experience and demonstrated success in business development and creating new business opportunities in challenging environments and/or;
• 1-2 years of experience and demonstrated success in journalism or related media venture and/or;
• 1-2 years experience in international development.
• A strong, demonstrated ability to work independently and entrepreneurially with little supervision or guidance.
• Superior writing and journalistic skills in addition to the ability to teach these skills to non-native English speakers with minimal journalism experience.
• Native fluency in English required. Knowledge of Arabic preferred.
• Bachelor’s degree in business administration, international development or journalism.
• Knowledge in SEO, social media and web analytics.
• An eye for innovation and willingness to experiment without fear of failure.
• Strong sense of humor and adventure required.

Responsibilities
• Research, develop, and write feature articles for National Yemen.
• Hire, manage and develop National Yemen’s staff journalists.
• Oversee all articles set to publish to ensure proper editing and quality of content.
• Help support day-to-day business operations.
• Develop relationships with existing and potential clients to identify sources of funding via grants and new business opportunities.
• Work closely with chief editor to develop the National Yemen Foundation.

Benefits and Pay
The internship will start with a modest stipend to cover basic living expenses. Any increase in pay will be directly related to individual performance and overall health of the paper and its foundation. The successful applicant will be provided with a one-year visa to work and live in Yemen.

Starting Date
Summer 2012

Restrictions
Once hired, the intern must commit fully to National Yemen and will not be allowed to string for other papers or work as a freelance journalist for the duration of the contract.
