Mobile Applications and Digital Producer

The Associated Press is seeking a mobile applications and digital producer for its Nerve Center in New York City.

The successful candidate will bring a hybrid of editorial, production and technical expertise to the job and be the point person for AP content and operations across mobile and tablet devices. They will also be involved in prototyping other digital products on new platforms. We need someone who can continually look at the big picture, at the user interface experience from their perspective, as well from the inside looking out, and who can curate content in a breaking news environment. He or she also needs to be social media and technically savvy. It will be cutting edge and challenging.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
-Take overall ownership of mobile content on AP’s mobile applications and mobile-optimized websites for smartphones and tablets.
- Balance editorial standards with product demands
-Oversee the top headlines mobile package
-Send “push” news alerts to mobile users
-Initiate “Big Story” pages on the iPad app as they break, curate content, be proactive in chasing down what all formats (text, video, photos, interactive) are planning:
-Execute the technical aspects of the above using a mobile content management system.
-Troubleshoot any editorial (problematic headlines for text/video, cropped photos) or technical issues on AP’s mobile apps and site.
-Ownership of the iPad “Contextual Areas”: some of which will be automated and some curated
-Actively take on cross-promotional approach to highlight major set piece events, some pages of which may be sponsored by outside organizations
- Develop plans and a schedule for the rollout of content areas related to special news events.
-Communicate effectively with managers at the Nerve Center, editors at regional desks, verticals and across formats, requesting changes when needed to deliver a strong, comprehensive report to customers and users across the planet.
-Liaise with departments including technology, corp comm, and product development.

Experience:

QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
- Extensive experience in mainstream, online and social media worldwide.
-Previous experience in running a mobile or online application
- Voracious interest in news across all emerging platforms -- iPad and other tablets, smart phones, online, connected TV and gaming consoles -- and knowledge of how information flows across all of them.
- Strong and proven skills at identifying major stories and elevating them in all formats, and coordinating with multiple managers in varied locations.
- Intimate knowledge of AP's newsgathering process and how breaking news travels across the AP, or ability to learn it quickly.
- Ability to react quickly to breaking news in a high-pressure, dynamic newsroom environment.
- Familiarity with the needs of cross-format storytelling, visual journalism and innovative news presentation.
- Ability to quickly assess and introduce new products and technology.
- Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with colleagues across departments, including news, product development, technology and corporate communications.
