Preliminary interviewer

for author of non-fiction book

Salary: $15 per hour, approx 10 per week
Duration of Position: next three months

Description:

I am looking for a talented interviewer with a background in science/health/medicine. You will be conducting (by phone) preliminary interviews for a best-selling author/journalist who is writing a book about back pain. You will be speaking to individuals who have experienced chronic back pain over months or years. You are looking for stories with strong narratives/personality/pathos/humor/anecdotal interest.

The right candidate will have a background in investigative journalism, ideally some personal experience with back pain, and the ability to empathize, appreciate and probe further without alienating the source. You should have an eye/ear for the good quote.

The right candidate may also have an opportunity to conduct field research in several areas, including an investigation of the mattress industry. (This does not mean that you get to sleep.)

Experience:

You should have investigative reporting experience, ideally in a health-related field. A sense of humor and a kind, but persuasive phone voice are necessary. You should have the equipment necessary to Skype and Call Record your phone conversations,as well as the ability to type your interviews as they occur. You also need meticulous record keeping skills.
