- What were you doing before you applied to J-School?
- What do you hope to learn this year?
- How do you get your news? Why did you choose those outlets?
- What do you hope to do post-graduation?
When researching graduate programs I looked at national ranking, works by successful students and the curriculum. What really sold me on the J-school at UCB was the interaction I had with the faculty, staff and students. The passion and sense of family seemed to come so naturally to everyone I spoke to. I can't describe a better climate for learning and professional development.
Before J-school I was a soldier in the U.S. Army. I worked in Korea and Afghanistan as TV news reporter for American Forces Network.
I hope to developing solid journalistic instincts and refine my individual visual storytelling style.
When it comes to consuming news I'm really eclectic. I like Public Radio International, the web content of The Huffington Post, Al Jazeera English and CNN on TV. The Economist is usually the first magazine I grab but more and more I find myself reading what my friends link on Facebook. My guilty pleasure is The Daily Show. For me it's all about a balance between informative and convenient.
Post-graduation I'd like to work for Discovery, public television or abroad. Any project with a team of passionate professionals is always attractive. Ultimately I'd like to produce independently for festivals and the pure joy of visual storytelling.
