Help with Streaming Video

Here at the J-School, we use Apple QuickTime for all of our streaming audio and video needs (QuickTime version 6 or later is required). On occassion, users are not able to connect to video streams due to firewall issues at their organizations. In a nutshell, some organizations have very strict policies about the internet "ports" over which they will allow traffic to flow. Web servers run on port 80, while QuickTime Streaming Server runs on port 554. Because port 554 is "non-standard," some organizations' security departments are unneccessarily suspicious of it.

Fortunately, QuickTime and the QuickTime Streaming Server are aware of this issue and offer a work-around for those affected by it. Our QuickTime Streaming Server is designed to stream on port 80 to those who are behind strict firewalls. You'll need to configure your computer for QuickTime streaming on port 80 as well. Here's how.

Windows

  1. Launch the QuickTime player and pull down Edit | Preferences | QuickTime Preferences
  2. Select Streaming Transport from the picklist
  3. Switch from UDP port 554 to HTTP port 80
  4. Close the preferences and try the video stream again.

  4. Switch from UDP port 554 to HTTP port 80
  5. Click OK, close the preferences, and try the video stream again.
