To Live or to Perish Forever
Nicholas Schmidle speaks about his experiences reporting in Pakistan
Presented by The Graduate School of Journalism
In early 2006, Nicholas Schmidle, 27 and newly married, moved to Pakistan with hopes of becoming a foreign correspondent. Three years later, as a regular contributor to The New York Times Magazine, Slate and The New Republic, he published an account of his time in Pakistan, titled To Live or to Perish Forever. Come listen to Nicholas speak about his experiences reporting in Pakistan and elsewhere around the world, the challenges and opportunities he sees as a freelancer working in hostile environments (especially as the face of journalism changes), and the complexities of writing about the Taliban and al-Qaeda.
