Dear Friends of Berkeley Journalism,

Here’s what we know:

TRUTH MATTERS.

Being UC Berkeley, we draw a special kind of student: Socially engaged, diverse, and dedicated to the thorough reporting that brings ignored realities to public light. Since our founding nearly a half-century ago during Berkeley’s watershed Free Speech Movement, we have educated journalists to honor the highest standards of ethical professionalism in the pursuit of truth. That is our instructional philosophy. And it works.

INDEPENDENCE MATTERS.

Today’s conversation about the future of journalism is one that we welcome. It challenges us and emboldens us. We graduate 60 students each year prepared to withstand political and commercial pressures that might compromise their commitment to deliver journalism of value and integrity — and to hold mighty institutions publicly accountable.

ETHICS MATTER.

Fairness. Courage. Thoroughness. Verification. Service. Clarity. Listening carefully and recounting faithfully. Protecting the vulnerable. Enabling redress and response for those who are criticized. Safeguarding the space in which civic wrongs are identified and addressed. Seeking social betterment. These are the rules that guide our students.

JOURNALISM MATTERS.

Support the next generation of professional journalists as they secure the training and mentoring they need to carry out this imperiled, but indispensable, mission. We know this matters to you and to the society that journalism serves.

Wishing you and yours a warm holiday season,

Edward Wasserman, Dean
