Current students at the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism are asking for your help. According to a recent survey taken by the J-School, students are hungry for mentoring opportunities. And that's where you come in...
You've written cover letters, perfected your resume, chased internships and know what it's like to hope for that first job out of school. You've worked in a newsroom, made it as a freelancer or possibly found fulfillment in a career outside of journalism.
As a mentor, you'll be a sounding board, you'll share advice – maybe even offer connections in the professional world. Your student may also ask you to read his or her master's project.
The relationship between the mentor and student will largely be determined by those involved. You can expect to spend about 2 hours a month working with your student. If you're in the Bay Area you may want to take the student out to dinner or coffee. Long-distance pairings will communicate over the phone and through e-mail.
More than 70 students tell us they'd like to have an alumni mentor this year. If you would like to work with one or perhaps two current J-School students, please e-mail the Alumni Coordinator to get a copy of our brief mentoring questionnaire.
The mentorship program is a new project of the J-School Alumni Board.
